The curcumins sativus is the scientific name of the cucumber belongs to the gourd family. This is a creeper plant giving fruits in seasons. This fruit known different names such as gherkins, pickles, in Brittan, Ireland, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand as gherkins and in United States, in Canada known as pickles and in India known as cucumber.

The native for the cucumber plant is South Asia, particularly India but, now cultivated in many countries. These fruits known as gherkins in Brittan, Ireland, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, as pickles in Canada and United States and, as cucumber in India, Sri Lanka, China. The countries such as China, the European Union, Russia, Turkey, Iran, and Ukraine are doing the production of gherkins and roughly meeting 80% of the world demand.

This is a seasonal plant. Generally, the life time of the plant is about 70 days from the date of seeding but varies with the variety, growth form, and environment. The cucumber is one of monoecious plants. Actually, the pollen has happening during the second-growth of male and female flowers. Each plant will produce 12-16 fruits once the female flower fertilized.

The gherkins plants are highly frost sensitive and thrives at relatively high temperature. For top production, the gherkins required a warm, moisture soil. This is one of the summer seasonal plants. Generally, the plants are grown at the area receiving full sun light with fertile soil. The soil must be neutral or slightly acidic (pH 6.5-7). Continuous water supply (drip irrigation) is required.

The gherkins are composed of about 96% of water helps to reduce dehydration and body weight. One study state that the gherkins reducing oxidative stress and blood sugar level.
