The scientific name of the amla tree is phyllanthus emblica and also known as emblic, myrobalan, emblic myrobalan, Indian goose berry, anola. The amla tree is a small, medium grow at a height up to eight meters with binate leaves, greenish-yellow flowers, and light greenish-yellow, spherical shape, hard edible fruits with six stripes.
The amla is an indigenous, medicinal and nutritional crop to Indian sub-continent mainly cultivated in many parts of India such as Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, etcetera. The amla trees naturally grow in a few countries such as Sri Lanka, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, China, Malaysia, Bhutan, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Panama and Japan.
The nutrients such as the fiber, proteins, carbohydrates, calcium, iron, carotene, thiamine, riboflavin, Nicene and, vitamin-c naturally found in amla fruits. The amla fruits are naturally sour, bitter, and astringent tastes. So that, since from the ancient days, the Indians are consuming the amla fruits regularly in many ways such as vegetable, health tonic, and traditional medicine.
After the harvest, the fruits segregated, cleaned, washed, and processed in to different states, such as raw state (vegetable), liquid state (fresh juice), powder state (plain, salt and sweet), dried state (plain, salt and sweet) and preserved state (drenched with honey and jaggery) in the way to meet different requirements.
