Generally, the jack is a device used to lift the loads with the help of less effort. A jack can work by mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, water, and air based on the method of force generation. A jack is playing a vital role in mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering related activities.

The hydraulic jacks are the simple mechanical device used to lift or move heavy loads by applying less force through pressurized oil medium. In the year of 1831, William Joseph Curtis filed a British Pattern for a hydraulic Jack. The pattern for the hydraulic jack – portable hydraulic press granted to the inventor Richard Dudgeon in 1851.

The hydraulic jacks working based on the Pascals Law. The Pascals law states that any of the pressure applied to a fluid inside the closed container will transmit that pressure equally in all directions throughout the fluid. The equation is P1=F1/A1 where P1 is the pressure to be generated, F1 is the load to be lifted and A1 is the area of the piston.

The hydraulic jack is mainly assembled with some mechanical parts that are the reservoir, pump, cylinder, ram, check valve, release valve. In the portable hydraulic jack, the reservoir and the pump internally connected and integrated within the body of the cylinder and ram assembly.

Generally, the cylinder assembly of the hydraulic jack consists with some mechanical parts that are the cylinder barrel, cylinder cap, cylinder head, piston, piston rod, seal gland, seals, etcetera. The pump assembly mainly consists of a low-pressure van pump, high pressure radial piston pump, pressure control valve, flow control valve, motor, etcetera. Similarly, the reservoir consists of strainers, filters, and level indicators.

Depends on the application, the hydraulic jacks grouped in to three types that are portable hydraulic jacks (used in domestic and commercial automobile vehicles), heavy type hydraulic jacks (used to move and lift heavy industrial, structural fabrications), and special type hydraulic jacks (used in heave civil constructions such as bridges and water reservoirs).

The portable hydraulic jack mostly hand operated fitted with a compact reciprocating piston pump and reservoir within the assembly but, in the case of heavy, special type hydraulic jack the pumps, motor, valve, and manifolds, separately fitted with the reservoir assembly and is known as hydraulic power pack system.

The quality of the hydraulic jacks based on its efficiency and performance generally, depending with the engineering design, material of the cylinder, piston and piston rod, accuracy of the machining process, quality of treatment, quality of the seals, brand of the motor, selection of the pump, valves, etcetera.

Although, the hydraulic jacks manufactured by many renowned industries, introducing modern technologies and production facilities, still there are some gaps, in the way to increase the efficiency, quantity, quality and to reduce the product cost, found, further to be filled.
